An entry from Putumayo's archives, Putumayo Presents: Jamaica makes a stab at covering the vast majority of the styles of reggae available on the island nation. More specifically, it restricts that coverage to the more classic forms (omitting dancehall, hip-hop, fusion, and generally anything involving gun talk and slackness). Essentially everything happening in the reggae scene after the end of the rocksteady movement and up to the death of Peter Tosh is represented here. The album opens with the title track from the Toots & the Maytals album Reggae Got Soul, infusing a bit of American soul into the reggae base. Culture follows with an exposition on the Rastafarian faith and Jimmy Cliff mixes the political realm with the party realm in "Give the People What They Want." Ska veteran Rico Rodriguez adds in a relatively rare reggae instrumental and Joe Higgs, one-time vocal tutor to Bob Marley, tosses in a basic piece of his repertoire. Polio victims Israel Vibration contribute a number and Ras Michael adds in a piece of reggae with a deep connection to the proper nyahbinghi drumming forms. The Gladiators perform a relatively basic work and early dance reggae is represented by the powerhouse combination of Black Uhuru and Sly & Robbie. Finishing the album are a pair of works from two of the largest innovators from the island: a piece of the earliest dub from Augustus Pablo's first album and a more recent work from Peter Tosh (licensing difficulties prevented the inclusion of a Bob Marley number), post-Wailers. Overall, it's an outstanding effort at including the major forms and styles as well as the proper figures in the scene over the last 40 years or so. Give it a listen as an introductory set of music to the reggae genre as a whole and use it as a stepping stone into deeper exploration of the various artists presented. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

OKA boys have just arrived back in Australia to release their new album "OKA LOVE". They spent the northern summer touring extensively through Canada. After their performances at the Quebec Summer festival '09, out of 380 bands, OKA were voted in the top five most memorable festival performances alongside festival headliners, Sting and Kiss.
Oka have a big summer planned, festivals including Australasian World Music Expo, Mullum Music Festival & Island Vibe Festival as well a whole bunch of venues Australia wide, spreading the "OKA LOVE".
OKA LOVE shines an optimistic light on the beauty of Indigenous cultures, in OKAs own progressive style .A smooth hi-fidelity sound that is full of beautiful uplifting melodies, tones and textures, cooked over raw didgeridoo rhythms and phatt dance driven grooves.

Considering its popularity in Jamaica, it’s hardly surprising that innumerable Country songs have received the Reggae treatment, and this trend is duly reflected in the music on this set. Most of the songs featured were originally major US hits, first performed by some of Country’s leading performers, ranging from Jim Reeves to Kris Kristofferson, while of equal significance among Reggae fans are those doing the covering, with Toots & The Maytals, Dennis Brown and John Holt among their number. The result is a hugely enjoyable, not to mention educational, set! Trojan.

Razia - Zebu Nation

Singer and songwriter Razia Said’s nomadic life has taken her across Africa to France, Italy, Ibiza, Bali and New York City, but despite these wanderings, her heart and soul remains inexorably tethered to Madagascar, the land of her birth. Her musical explorations have also been wide ranging, and over the years Razia has experimented with French chanson, rock, jazz and even smooth, Sade-style R&B. But it took reaching back to her cultural roots for Razia to uncover her true artistic calling as one of African music’s most promising talents.
With the album Zebu Nation, Razia has created an inspiring collection of songs that draw deeply on the music she heard growing up in the town of Antalaha in northeastern Madagascar. The source for the world’s most prized Bourbon vanilla, Antalaha is one of Madagascar’s wealthiest communities, although there remains a great gap between rich and poor. Razia was born on December 1, 1959 when her mother was just a teenager and not yet ready for the role of parenting. To diffuse the scandal, her mother was sent to the Comores Islands and Razia’s grandparents raised her in a bustling household filled with relatives. Razia first heard the infectious rhythms of local salegy music blasting out of the town’s ubiquitous radios. It was one of Razia’s older uncles that first introduced her to French music as well as The Beatles, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and other Western stars. Her uncle even invited her to sing the latest French pop songs on stage with his band when she was just ten years old.

Heavily influenced by Labelle and the Pointer Sisters, Stargard was a female R&B vocal group that was best known for providing the theme song from the 1977 film Which Way Is Up. Rochelle Runnells, Debra Anderson, and Janice Williams — who comprised Stargard's original three-woman lineup — didn't go for the type of breathy, sweet, girlish vocals that the Supremes and the Three Degrees were known for. Like Labelle and the Pointer Sisters, Stargard favored robust, aggressive belting and brought a gospel-like passion to its funk, soul, and disco. Stargard signed with MCA in 1977, when its first single, the ultra-funky "Theme From 'Which Way Is Up'" (a Norman Whitfield gem), soared to number one on the R&B singles charts. Stargard's self-titled debut album came out in early 1978, and later that year, MCA released the trio's sophomore effort What You Waitin' For. That album's funky title track (also written by Whitfield) became a Top Ten R&B hit, but after that, Stargard lost its commercial momentum. In 1979, Stargard left MCA for Warner Bros. and recorded its third album, The Changing of the Gard, which was produced by Robert Wright and Earth, Wind & Fire's Verdine White (Maurice White's brother) and contained the single "Wear It Out." That superb album had the makings of a smash, but regrettably, it didn't do nearly as well as it should have. In 1980, Anderson left the group, and Runnells and Williams decided to carry on as a duo instead of hiring a replacement. As a duo, Runnells and Williams recorded 1981's Norman Whitfield-produced Back 2 Back for Warner Bros. and 1982's Nine Lives (which Runnells produced) for MCA. Both of those LPs received very little attention, and in 1983.

Milva - Gesichter einer Frau

Milva, real name Maria Ilva Biolcati (born July 17, 1939) is an Italian singer, actress and TV personality. She is also known as the Red (due to the coulour of her hair) or as the Goro Panther, which stems from a journalist naming the 3 most talented Italian female singers of the 1970s with the birth place plus an animal name (the other two more are the Cremona Tiger and the Ligonchio Eagle).
She was born in Goro, province of Ferrara.
In 1959 Milva won a contest for new voices, and was named the overall winner from more than seven thousand participants. In 1960 she recorded her first 7” single with Cetra records: Edith Piaf’s song “Milord”. Her real debut was on the stage of the Sanremo Music Festival in 1961, where she took third place. She competed many times at the Festival (14 times in total, the last time in 1993). The highest position she has reached is second place in 1962, but she has never won to date.
In 1965, a fortunate meeting led to a definitiive change in her career: Italo-German actor, dramatist and director Giorgo Strehler helped to develop her skills in staging and singing in Italian theatres (especially the Piccolo Teatro in Milan) and she began to perform a more committed repertoire (songs of Italian resistance movement, songs from Bertold Brecht’s pieces, etc.). In the following years she alternated success in singing (especially in Germany where she won platinum and gold records for top sales) and success in theatre, where a remarkable 1973 edition of The Threepenny Opera met with success all over Europe.

To say The Age of Consent is a great album of dance-oriented synth-pop music is to sell it extremely short; this is simply a great album, period. Jimmy Somerville's soaring tenor may take some getting used to, but the songs, many of them dealing with homophobia and alienation (none more eloquently than "Smalltown Boy"), are compelling vignettes about the vagaries of life as a gay man. Cynics predisposed to dismissing entire genres of music based on trendiness or a limited appeal ("dance music is for dancing, not listening") miss the point in lumping this in with more mindless forays into techno or neo-disco. As the Pet Shop Boys (the world's greatest disco band) proved a few years later, you can have substantive content and wrap it up in a compelling, visceral, dance-oriented package. Few bands understood this better, or earlier, than Bronski Beat.

Tanita Tikaram - The Cappuccino Songs (1998)

Tanita started releaseing albums in the late eighties. The first couple were of a folky, Suzanne Vega-like sound, but by the time of 1993's "Lovers in the City," she transformed her sound to a more cosmopolitan one. That album (hard to find, but grab it if you see it!) was a stirring mix of soul, folk, and eccentric orchestrations. This latest release is in the same vein, but a little simpler. Think Bjork meets Van Morrison. I know, it's a strange combination, but there's really nothing conventional about this extremely talented woman. She sings a lot about relationships, often with a sprinkle of euro-funk, tempered with acoustic guitars and piano. It's a unique mix and rather difficult to describe. You have to hear it for yourself. ~Amazon

Grant Geissman (born April 13, 1953) is a crossover jazz, contemporary jazz and new age guitarist and an Emmy-nominated composer for network TV series and TV movies. An in-demand studio musician, he has recorded extensively for several labels since 1976, and he can be heard playing guitar on the theme for Monk and other TV series.Geissman was born in Berkeley, California. Growing up in San Jose, California, Geissman took guitar lessons from a succession of San Jose musicians, including Geoff Levin (of the pop group People!) and local jazz favorites Bud Dimock, Don Cirallo and Terry Saunders. Encouraged by these teachers to learn jazz standards and to improvise, he began playing in rock bands on weekends and also with small jazz groups and big bands.

Jerry Lee Lewis compilations have often been lackluster affairs. The bulk of them focus on his years at Sun, while others are cheap and messy overviews of his country material. Seldom do these compilations justice to the performer Jerry Lee Lewis really was. In essence Jerry was a Southern man, a true country star. His songs are honest and raw tales about the ups and downs on the wild side, they don't call him the Killer for nothing.
Jerry started his career with some immensely successful rockabilly sides. He was the only true competitor to one Elvis Presley. Lewis could have gone in to history as the King of Rock & Roll if it weren't for his highly controversial marriage to 13 year old kin. Because R&R was marketed to kids radio stations refused to play his music once the scandal got out. This chain of events turned out to be a curse and a blessing at the same time. Although it slowed down his career it did push Jerry into country recordings. As it turned out this is were his true strength lied.

In late 2008, my family and I were given an opportunity to spend three months in China. Renmin Park is a reflection of my family's adventure in China. It's a fictional love story about two people whose two worlds will forever keep them apart.
It's a thank-you letter to an obscure city and the people who opened up their lives to five very strange strangers. It's a document about a bewilderingly complex culture that is, once again, experiencing a massive upheaval. It's another chapter in a band's ongoing twenty-five year journey.

Jimmy C. Newman had several country hits in the 1950s, including the often covered "Cry, Cry Darling," but his Cajun-tinged hit "Alligator Man" a decade later turned him increasingly in the direction of traditional Louisiana 2-step material, although his approach was never strictly purist. This 20-song set is a great introduction to this Cajun-fueled side of Newman's career and includes his signature "Alligator Man," a version of Doug Kershaw's "Louisiana Man," a rendition of Hank Williams' faux Cajun anthem "Jambalaya," and a pair of bayou standards, "Jole Blon" and "Big Mamou."

Biography by John Bush

The "C" stands for Cajun, and though much of Jimmy C. Newman's early country material has little swamp stylings, he developed a fusion on several 1960s albums that established him as a forerunner in Cajun-country music. Newman was born on August 27, 1927, in High Point, LA; as a child, he listened more to Gene Autry than the Cajun music of the area but still included several Cajun songs in his repertoire with Chuck Guillory's Rhythm Boys, which he joined while still a teenager. Newman recorded several unsuccessful sides in the late '40s for J.D. Miller's Feature label, but Miller later convinced Nashville legend Fred Rose to give the budding singer a shot. After recording four songs in 1953, Newman signed to Dot Records and scored a hit the following year when "Cry, Cry, Darling" reached number four in the country charts.

Newman's chart success prompted the Louisiana Hayride to hire him as a regular performer. His next four hits all made Top Ten, including 1955's "Daydreamin'," "Blue Darlin'," and "God Was So Good." Newman moved up to the Grand Ole Opry in 1956 and released "A Fallen Star" the following year. The single, his biggest hit, spent two weeks at number two and also entered the pop Top 25. The singer was unhappy with his Dot contract, though, and moved to MGM in 1958.

By November of that year, Newman charted another Top Ten hit, "You're Makin' a Fool Out of Me"; he closed out the decade with three Top 30 singles and the Top Ten "Grin and Bear It" in July 1959. Newman began the '60s with success also, bringing "A Lovely Work of Art" to number six and "Wanting You to Be With Me" to number 11. Not content with his popularity at MGM, he switched labels again, signing with Decca in 1961.

Now that he was an established artist, Newman began to integrate Cajun influences in such Top 25 singles as "Alligator Man" and "Bayou Talk." His 1963 album Folk Songs of the Bayou Country was a milestone in the popularization of Cajun music and included great work by accordionist Shorty LeBlanc and Newman regular Rufus Thibodeaux on fiddle. He hit the country Top Ten at the end of the year with "D.J. for a Day," and his recordings soon moved back to the Nashville sound, with occasional Cajun influences. (One notable exception is 1967's Louisiana Saturday Night.)

Newman reached the Top Ten twice within six months in 1965-1966 with "Artificial Rose" and "Back Pocket Money," but they proved to be his final hits. The following three years saw occasional placements in the Top 30, and his last chart entry was 1970's "I'm Holding Your Memory (But He's Holding You)." Following his commercial decline, Newman moved back to Cajun music, recording Cajun albums for the La Louisianne, Swallow, and Rounder labels. His performances continue to excite many in Europe as well as America, and his Grand Ole Opry slot also kept him busy.

"Ragged Old Flag" is a pleasurable album to listen to on many levels, a period-piece that holds up well in Johnny Cash's extensive catalog. First, it showcases Cash at a vibrant, conscious period of his career in the early- to mid-'70s. His baritone voice is warm and full, his songs are lyrically thought-provoking and easy on the ears, and his vision and demeanor seem focused; you can tell he was an authentic working man who admired other working men and women. And, though Cash was well-known for covering the work of other great artists' songs, on "Ragged Old Flag" every song is his own, written exclusively by him -- and the results are great.

The fiercely proud, storytelling title track is an ode to past American wars, and the song's prose is stunning. Cash succinctly sums up, in his heartfelt way, the hardships "Old Glory" has endured through the many years and wars this country has fought, through the eyes of a smalltown gentleman who's been around for a while. "Don't Go Near the Water" is a simple song where Cash is fishing with his young son, lamenting the growing deterioration of the water's content, speaking to the larger issue of worsening environmental conditions in the U.S. at that time. However, this 29-minute record is far from a political diatribe, as most of the songs are classic Cash tunes that speak to good old-fashioned middle-Americans, living ordinary lives. "All I Do is Drive" is about the grueling life on the road of a semi driver; "King of the Hill" deals with climbing up the ladder at work; "Pie in the Sky" talks about death; "While I've Got it on my Mind" speaks volumes about the benefits of marriage; "I'm a Worried Man" talks about the worry that's involved when there's young mouths to feed and not enough currency in the household. Interspersed with this sing-along campfire music is the background vocals from the legendary Oak Ridge Boys (see The Definitive Collection (Oak Ridge Boys), whose presence lends a lushness to the otherwise stark but worthy Cash-written songs.

Overall, it's just simply hard not to like this simplistic album that not only captured a time period, but also captures Cash at a poignant moment in his long, storied career. While many of Cash's older live albums, and his later Rick Rubin-produced records get more attention (see American V: A Hundred Highways), "Ragged Old Glory" is a fantastic starting point to discover the Man in Black's admirable mindset and great music.

Albert King was the coolest guitar player of the blues scene, and his marvellous solos and licks were blended with the funkiest grooves of the early seventies. That's FUNKY LONDON, a collection of great, uplifting songs. The first 4 songs were recorded circs 1969, the others in 1973, but the high quality is the same. "Sweet Fingers" is simply a divine instrumental number, pure happiness and joy translated to guitar phrasing. "Finger on the trigger" is an energetic rock-a-rolling blues, "Bad Luck" is an ultra-funky one that ends in a sensuous jam. "Lovingest woman..." is an extended slow blues, and the way King built the emotional intensity during his 3-minute-plus solo is masterful. Actually, all the solos in this album are a lesson for blues players. The licks can be simple, sometimes you can anticipate what's coming, but the tone of the guitar, the incredible voice-like quality of the phrasing... it is just what I always dreamed to listen in a blues recording. As I wrote above, the band relies on soul and funk, this is not a "pure" blues album. But the band is so tight ("Cold Sweat" is outstanding), the feeling so good, I think anyone interested in early seventies black music and rock can have a great time listening to this album.

Larry Carlton may not have been issuing records in the United States with any regularity, but Sapphire Blue proves he hasn't been sitting on his hands, either. It's Carlton's first blues-oriented album in many years. Featuring a large band with a complete horn section, Reese Wynans on B-3, Matt Rollings on Rhodes piano, Terry McMillan on piano, and others, Carlton is in fine, even understated form here. This group plays like a band with a soloist at its center, not like a bunch of paid hacks backing up a guitar whiz. Witness the gorgeous horn charts by Jim Horn on "Friday Night Shuffle," and the triple melody line in "A Pair of Kings." The laid-back, jazzy blues feel of "Night Sweats," with a memorable groove and minimal horn punctuations, leaves Carlton's guitar room to jam inside a warm space. The title track is a B.B. King-style groover — à la 1970 — with a stinging, slightly distorted guitar sound from Carlton. This isn't the blues, it is blues, played soulfully and with considerable musicianship that forgoes flash for feeling, albeit muted by pristine production. Carlton's fans may puzzle over this one a bit because of its concentration on aesthetic beauty and relative purity, but those who weren't paying attention should sit up and take notice

This high-water mark by the band finds them softening their rougher edges and stretching out into jazz territory, yet still retaining a blues foundation. There's not a bad cut here, with enough variety (bottleneck slide, acoustic guitar, horns, and strings) to warrant frequent late-night listenings. "A Hard Way to Go," "Needle and Spoon," and "Stay While the Night Is Young" are especially strong, as are two instrumental numbers. Unfortunately, leader Kim Simmonds lost his greatest asset when vocalist Chris Youlden quit for an ill-fated solo career after this recording. Youlden had one of the most distinctive voices in British blues, and Savoy would never fully recover from his exit. Peter Kurtz - AMG

Review by Robert Taylor
Renegade Gentleman finds Larry Carlton creating a vibrant mix of Southern rock, blues, and fusion. It is refreshing not to hear the drum machines and overproduced horn and keyboard arrangements that have become typical of a Carlton-led session. This setting finds Larry playing very comfortably with harmonica whiz Terry McMillan, a legend in Nashville. "Sleep Medicine" and "Anthem" are both excellent vehicles for Carlton to shine, and "Farm Jazz" gets a welcome facelift from its dismal debut on Kid Gloves. Overall, Carlton achieved what he seemed to be striving for, although there are some rather embarrassing moments ("Never Say Naw"). Recommended mostly due to Carlton's stretching out and fresh approach.

Review by Robert Taylor
Sleepwalk is slightly better than Strikes Twice thanks in part to the absence of Larry Carlton's toneless singing. "Last Nite" and "10:00 P.M." have become staples in Carlton's live set. The legendary Carlton feel is evident throughout this session, but "Blues Bird" stands as the high-water mark. "Sleepwalk" is played beautifully, almost preventing the listener from noticing the sap-heavy strings in the background. Carlton's faceless rhythm section does little to enhance the music (as is usually the case with his solo efforts), but his playing more than makes up for this. Despite sounding a bit dated, this is still worth exploring, especially for guitarists.

2010 two CD deluxe edition including a bonus CD with 10 additional tracks including 'Dirtee Disco', 'Nuffin' Long', 'Marks Outta Ten', 'Heavy-With Chase & Status', 'Doin' It Big' and more. Tongue N' Cheek is undoubtedly the most upbeat album Dizzee has ever made whilst still retaining that lyrical sharpness that underlines his records. As well as three hit singles ('Holiday', 'Bonkers' and 'Dance With Me'), it features 'Road Rage', a thumping House track, and 'Dirtee Cash' which features a sample of a classic Stevie V tune. Shy FX, who collaborated with Dizzee on Maths + English, adds production duties to the carnival-esque, summertime anthem of 'Can't Tek No More' and Trance superstar Tiesto has provided the beats to 'Bad Behaviour', but it's 'Chillin' Wiv Da Man Dem' which is Dizzee's biggest departure to date: a classic, smooth-sounding R&B tune reminiscent of Tupac or Snoop Dog Dirtee Stank.

' Producer Bill Laswell was given the Black Arc imprint of Rykodisc, and "Hell and Back" was one of two initial releases to feature Miles, the other was the power trio Hardware with Bootsy Collins and Steve Salas. The production is excellent, with the standout tracks coming at the end: the instrumental "The Decision" and the funky closer, "Nothing Left to Lose." Miles' mixture of rock, soul, and blues has not changed much over the years, but this album doesn't quite reach the heights of his earlier Mercury material.' Sean.Westergaard@allmusic.com

Blumentopf - Wir (Special Edition)(2010)

18 Jahre Bandgeschichte. 18 Jahre live. 18 Jahre Teambuilding.
