Mastermind Daniel Gildenlöw and his guys have ventured everything and won much – this was the conclusion of fans and critics shortly after the release of Pain of Salvation’s ambitious concept album “Be“ last year in autumn. To be or not to be? Anyway, at least in musical respect the Swedish blasted all stylistic borders. Already a year before, the band brought the “Be“ project several times to the stage in their home country, as a rock show with orchestral support, spoken word passages, costumes, and acting performances. How impressive these events were one can now fully comprehend with the DVD “Be Live”.
The nine piece “Orchestra of Eternity” as well as the band were in best playing mood, Latin song titles, spoken sequences, prayers from the answering machine via playback, and a musical journey into realms between Queen alike opera rock, northern folk, Floydian spherical sounds, classical music, and of course prog metal, and even gospel – for the senses this live event of “Be“ must have been a memorable experience for everyone during the three weeks run in a theatre of Pain of Salvation’s home town of Eskilstuna in the summer of 2003.
Daniel Gildenlöw about the concept behind the music: “I consider the story of ‘Be’ as a kind of modern fairy tale about the genesis of life. It deals with mankind, with God, and our relationship with faith and science. The most important question of all is: How is everything connected with each other? Science gives us a few hints regarding this, and different religions, too; however we are not able to really comprehend the whole system of life and emotions. As part of the system we cannot view it in its wholeness from outside”.
