"Cemetery Earth is still doom solidly in the Pentagram tradition, but the '70s-isms have been downplayed. Perhaps this is a result of the arrival of new bassist John Gaffney, but I suspect that is only part of the story. The '70s groove isn't completely gone, but it has been usurped by a classic metal feel, with much Priest and Maiden in evidence. The riffs are more straightforward, not as "hooky" as previous efforts. Chris Koslowski produced, and each instrument is more audible than on either of their two previous long-players. The timbre is excellent, even a bit more polished than we're used to, without being soul-suckingly smooth. Greg's vocals, in particular, sound more "finished;" multi-tracked, and with a judicious use of echo. The lyrics, as always, are somewhat abstract and epic in scope. The melodies are well thought-out and memorable; this may be the best collection of Pale Divine songsmithing ever."
