Hysterica is a quite new all-female band from Sweden and is about to release its debut album ‘Metalwar’ at the end of the month. Those among you, who are a bit familiar with my work, should know that I’m not too keen on female vocals in general. Of course there are exceptions in Doro, Sabina Classen (Holy Moses), Ann Boleyn (Hellion), Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy), Veronica Freeman (Benedictum) and Liv Kristine. Also when it comes to all-female bands I’m always prejudice. Well, except in the case of Girlschool.
But anyway, these Swedish ball crushers play traditional heavy metal with a modern sound and I must say that they do it pretty well. Instrumentally these ladies know their business and in Anni De Vil they have a great singer with balls. Her screaming voice sometimes reminds me of Doro’s and she puts on a convincing performance. Also sound technically the album is in great shape (Peter Tagtagren). Unfortunately they don’t manage to conquer a spot in my list of exceptions just yet! Even though these ladies surely know how to rock, the songs sound too predictable. The cliche lyrics and the fitting (sometimes too) exaggerated tough image bores in the end. On the other hand, their true attitude is impressive and they audibly have the metal heart in the right place.
In general the band makes a professional impression and show certain potential with rockers such as ‘Girls Made Of Heavy Metal’. But with this ‘Metalwar’ they won’t rise above the average. At the same time I can say that you should definitely check them out, because with a bit more experience these ladies may find their way to the true metal top. Just keep practicing.
