Hungarian rapper, Marcus May is a perfect example for cosmopolitan. With the idea of a “global rap album” he started to organize a worldwide collaboration one and a half year ago. After hundreds of emails and several fixings his plan came true. The result talks for itself. 33 guests can be heard on his album, “Babel” in 33 different languages.
Through the organizing Marcus May became a real MySpace maniac. Soon he realized things aren’t that simple as he had to subdue some linguistic barriers. But with a great patience finally he could set off a project that hopefully becomes a movement.
A kind of movement that connects tongues, cultures and encourages people to use their mother languages.
Another aim of the product is to give an opportunity to the so-called “little languages”. With the introducing of Knug-1 and Mastiff - two indigenous rap pioneers – Babel is more than a simple adventure. Knug-1 is from the arctic Norway with a Sami descent, and Mastiff’s from the top of the world, Tibet. If it’s still not enough, you can catch “special” languages on the album like Sardinian and Kazakh that’s also not an ordinary deal. Moreover the Arabic and the Hebrew rapper are on the same track flowing in harmony about friendship.
However the 14-track Babel is not an average “various artists” stuff. It’s Marcus May’s solo with tons of guests. Marcus himself rips the mic in every single song in Hungarian too. So you can see what happens when Central Europe rolls up the sleeves. We have to mention that all the beats came from Marcus’ kitchen, each with a purist treatment of hip-hop.
If you are opened for the new, this is your album. And the best thing is you don’t need a passport or a dictionary to feel the rhymes. Babel is a taste of cultures, the greatest cavalcade that you have ever witnessed.
THE LANGUAGES APPEAR ON THE ALBUM: Spanish, Swahili, Estonian, Greek, Kazakh, Chinese, Indonesian, Mongolian, French, Romanian, Turkish, Serbian, Hindi, Portuguese, Albanian, Czech, German, Japanese, Russian, Finnish, Hebrew, Arabic, Burmese, Thai, Danish, Italian, Sardinian, Swedish, English, Zulu, Tibetan, Polish, Sami.
